Elegant materials and humble moves accompanied by simple technical concepts completely transform and re-balance this existing untouched 1950s ranch home. The first-time homeowners — with careers in sustainable food sourcing — understood there is much more to materials than aesthetics. We set out to create a home to serve their cooking, and entertaining needs, plus a space to showcase collected art and objects.

The once-deep, tucked-away galley kitchen is now the heart of a great room with expanded ceilings and glazing to the back deck. Beyond the Great Room, we added a 600-square-foot primary bedroom suite that extends into the back garden, allowing for views and privacy. The addition flows seamlessly from the existing structure while creating a semi-enclosed courtyard, nesting the brand-new deck and built-in grille for open-air cooking and indoor/outdoor entertaining. The home features integrated and automated window coverings, lighting, speakers, and extensive in-wall cord management.

On the exterior, finishes and windows were replaced with more energy-efficient glazing, wall, and roof systems, including solar panels and Tesla Batteries. The new exterior finishes, lighting, and landscape combine to translate the new interiors to the street and backyard experience.
