TAP Studio transformed this gutted craftsman into a family-friendly home that would be both elegant yet not overly precious. Together with the owners, we also aspired for the home not to feel renovated all at once but rather appear like an evolution over time.

In partnership with JM|A+D, we cleverly restructured the floor plan with a small addition to transform the once-odd house into a functional family home where the homeowners could raise their sons. Following a complex permitting process involving both the LA Building Department and the California Coastal Commission, the project right-sized bedrooms and reclaimed redundant circulation to create a new primary bedroom suite while adding an extra 2nd-floor bedroom and a new full dining room, opening up to new terraced gardens, pool, and ADU.

To achieve the comfortably warm, lived-in spaces, we restored the house to its original charm with new trim and molding while simultaneously layering modern hand-crafted millwork, lighting and wallpaper. The result is eclectic layered spaces, all rooted in the craftsman design ethos of honesty in materials and craft. We leveraged hand-made tile, custom millwork detailing designed with the family, hand-selected veneers, stone, handmade ceramic and fabric fixtures, and individually selected and curated knobs by one of the owners.

The modernized home also features fully integrated and automated technology systems, including internet connectivity, smart lights and speakers, and state-of-the-art cooking technology.
